Senegal Edges Morocco to Win AFCON Title

(MENAFN) Senegal has captured its second consecutive Africa Cup of Nations championship, edging host nation Morocco 1-0 in a thrilling extra-time contest that featured dramatic penalty drama and extended stoppage minutes on Sunday.

The championship showdown at Rabat's Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium—capacity 69,500—remained scoreless through regulation despite intense tactical jousting between both sides.

Deep into injury time during the 95th minute, the hosts earned a spot-kick after video review determined Senegal defender Malick Diouf had brought down Morocco winger Brahim Diaz inside the penalty area. The VAR decision triggered furious objections from Senegal's squad, causing substantial delays.

Play didn't restart until the 24th minute of added time, when Senegal shot-stopper Edouard Mendy denied Diaz's chipped penalty attempt, forcing the match into an additional 30 minutes.

Pape Gueye delivered the championship-winning strike in the 94th minute of the extended period, clinching Senegal's triumph.

The victory marks Senegal's second straight continental title following their maiden AFCON success in the tournament's previous cycle, while simultaneously crushing Morocco's hopes of lifting the trophy on home turf.
